"Everyone and their grandmother know about Kazaa;
a few even know about Kazaa’s cleaner cousin
“Kazaa Lite”. Hardly anyone I have
spoken to has heard of Direct Connect ++, also called
DC++. This tool can be way better than Kazaa or worse
depending on how much stuff you share. If you are a
LEECH (someone who does not share, and only
downloads), you will find that this tool is useless.
WHY you may ask:
well, DC++ unlike Kazaa is very fragmented. One
connects to servers that have their own set of users.
Servers do not share users between each other. This
makes DC++ both way better and way worse, depending on
which server you connect to. Additionally, most large
communities or servers require that you share in
excess of 50 GB. That’s more than the full hard
drive capacity of some computers.
Advantages of this approach are plentiful: one can
start a community of like minded users and decide what
the entry criteria are; almost like exclusive clubs.
Additionally, the download speeds are in excess of 50
Kbps for files that are shared by multiple users;
assuming that you yourself are on a broadband
connection.
For the select few who have more than 50 GB to share,
there is a wealth of information that can be
downloaded at super fast speeds. Additionally, the
files one gets on DC++ are typically of better quality
that those on Kazaa, simply because many Kazaa users
use dummy files to increase their ratings."
